The Ties That Bind

Illustration | Production Design | Quilting

I created a self-portrait quilt using applique and couching methods. I blended digital design with physical/crafting by designing pattern pieces and the quilting pattern digitally and using them to create something physical.

The various shapes in the background of the quilt represent different people in my life. I created simple illustrations in illustrator and then broke them up into simple shapes to retain anonymity and keep things abstract.

The quilt represents the way that we are shaped by the relationships we have with those around us.

This was a collaborative project that I did with my mother. She is an avid quilter and guided me through the quilting process. I used my technical knowledge to design everything digitally and then we made it into a reality together.

The quilt pattern was designed using various types of knots to create a somewhat meandering path. This design supplemented the quilt’s overall representation of the emotional ties between people.
